Cause and treatment of diastema:

1. Around 2 mm of space between two front teeth at the age between 9 to 11 yr is a normal condition and it will disappear by itself after the eruption of the canine tooth.
2. Extra small tooth present between two front teeth - careful extraction of the extra tooth and orthodontic treatment for space closure.
3. Thick labial frenum between tooth (part of gum) - surgical removal of frenum before/after orthodontic treatment.
4. If diastema is due to small tooth size comparing to arch (jaw bone)- it can be treated by tooth color crown, veneer, or tooth color restoration of the tooth.
5. Bad habits such as thumb sucking, tongue thrusting- these habits should be removed after that most of the time space disappears by itself.
6. Any cyst or tumor between teeth –surgical removal of cyst or tumors.
7. Some orthodontic treatment also cause spacing between front teeth such as maxillary expansion but it is not a cause of worry as it will disappear after treatment
